Some people love christenings; other people can’t always be bothered to attend them. Sure, you have to listen to a vicar say things you don’t really understand, but regardless, when you receive an invite to one you should accept graciously. However, there are some specific rules you should abide by if you want to keep the parents, the vicar and the church happy. Read on for 5 christening guest rules to abide by:
1. Wear Appropriate Clothing
This sounds quite straight forward, but you wouldn’t believe the amount of people that don’t wear appropriate clothing to christenings. Sure, you can look nice, but getting a lot of leg/chest out is a big no-no. If you want to wear a dress, make it just above/below the knee or even a maxi dress for full coverage. Make sure you don’t have too much skin on show, and that the outfit is whether appropriate. Men should at least wear a shirt and trousers – jeans and t-shirts are too casual!
2. At Least Take a Card With You
Another thing christening guests do is show up without even taking a card with them. The card should be addressed to the baby, and you can find plenty of christening cards in shops like Clinton’s. You may also want to include the parent’s names on the card. If you’re feeling especially generous, then you may want to take a gift. Christening silver is always a popular choice and a nice keepsake for the baby.
3. Pay Attention During the Ceremony
If you’re talking during the ceremony, slyly looking at your phone, or just plain not paying attention, you won’t look as if you’re very grateful to have been invited there. Pay attention, sing hymns when instructed, and smile at the right moments. The church is usually a very quiet, tranquil place, so bear this in mind and try not to clap after sermons or make too much noise (the vicar probably won’t appreciate this).
4. Show Your Face at The After Party
There’s usually a little after party that follows christenings. This is sometimes just sandwiches and a casual drink, and sometimes it’s a huge party. You should at least show your face at this after party and have one drink for the baby to celebrate the occasion.
5. Thank the Parents for Inviting You
Always thank the parents for inviting you afterwards. It’s up to you how you do this; you can either send them a thank you card, a text message, write a message on Facebook or say it to them before you leave. Whatever you do, make sure you don’t forget to show your appreciation.
Follow the above christening guest rules and you’ll be the perfect christening guest! If you’re taking a partner and child with you too, make sure that they abide by the above rules too. You can send a joint card/gift, but they should dress appropriately, pay attention, and be polite.
Have a great time!
